Residents of Prairieville, Louisiana say an inadequate sewer system has forced raw sewage into their homes and yards.  Some say that the development of a new shopping center is contributing to the problem, demonstrating that limited infrastructure is slowing economic growth in the area.

Headlines
$44 million in sewer upgrades in Columbia, South Carolina will stem chronic sewage spills that occur during heavy rains.  The project is part of a $105 million upgrade to both the clean water and drinking water systems.

A water main break in Alexandria, Virginia clogged morning rush hour traffic on Friday.  Eastbound lanes of Franconia Road were closed while repairs were made.

Aging infrastructure is to blame for over 100 basketball sized sinkholes in North Royalton, Ohio.  Analysis has shown that failing pipes are allowing dirt and ground water to mix in the water system, causing the cave-ins.

Stimulus Spotlight
$4.5 million in stimulus funds granted through the USDA will fund an expanded water system in Clarendon County, South Carolina.

Tennessee will receive $77 million from the stimulus package to help address more than 300 drinking water and clean water projects requiring funding.  Municipalities are now working to meet the February 17, 2010 deadline for funding obligation.
