Thursday Headlines: Atlanta Raising Rates After Federal Inaction
Atlanta utility officials have proposed a series of five rate hikes for water and proposed a series of five rate hikes for water and sewer service beginning with 27.5 percent later this year and followed by four increases of 10 to 15 percent. If enacted, household water bills will increase 170% over the next 10 years. Mayor Shirley Franklin stated:
”It appears until the federal government decides that water quality is important at the federal level, the average folks are going to have to continue to pay.”

The Town of Somerville, Alabama recently received a check for $3.7 million from USDA Rural Development for use in developing a pubic sewer system.
In California, the ocean near Marina del Rey was declared safe for swimming Wednesday after testing showed bacteria from a sewage spill on Monday had dissipated.
